"One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple."
- Psalm 27:4
It's important to go after one thing!
When we read all 66 books of the Bible we read of one thing, one person, Jesus Christ.
In different ways we see the life of Jesus reflected and highlighted in the text, Jesus is found on every page of the Bible. There are over 40 writers in the Bible, but one thing remains.
Jews believe that trades should be passed through generations, that a skill should be honed through generations. For example, if the forefathers were farmers then everyone that followed would become farmers as well. With time, they are only improving what their fathers began, this is why the Jews have the smallest population but have the most success.
The principle of the one thing: This principle works in every aspect of your life, business, school, work, you name it. There is power in doing one thing!
10,000-hour rule: Whenever you spend over 10,000 hours on one thing you become an expert in it. Meaning that you can't become an expert when you do too many things.
Compound interest principle: When you take a penny and double it over 31 days you can gain $10,000,000. With one effort, skill, type of knowledge, wisdom, doubled over a long time and you become an expert.
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the LORD's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "LORD, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" "Martha, Martha," the LORD answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed-or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
- Luke 10:38-42
In this scripture, Martha and Mary receive Jesus into their home and Martha is busy running around trying to serve Jesus. Whereas her sister Mary is at His feet, listening. Martha begins to complain to Jesus because she is busy running around alone, However, Jesus reveals to her the importance of one thing.
Here are some important things to note from this scripture!
1. The attention of Martha was diverted, her attention was taken away from the master, the main thing, fellowship with the Lord. She was running around trying to serve but not being connected with the Lord. Hence, Mary wanted to hear from the Lord before she served Him. Our focus may be distracted and removed from the one thing and we must realign ourselves. One thing is needful, one thing is important, and it can never be taken away.
2. Martha became accusatory, and accusations come from the devil. She begins to say bad things about her sister because she is busy and overwhelmed, while her sister is not. When you don't focus on one thing you become bitter and accuse others even when they are doing the right thing. Today let's return to the one thing!
3. Martha became worried and troubled, it is possible to become worried to the point of death over nothing! Right now you may be robbed of your peace, rest, joy, strength, and agility. You may even feel weak because worry is eating at the center of your life. Just like Martha, your mind may be all over the place, and you may be worried about many things. Today is the day of readjustment don't be worried about many things. The word troubled has the same root as the word tormented which is biblically associated with demons. Worry creates a portal for demons, when you worry you are creating a space and area for demons to hack your system. When it's time to sleep, go to sleep! Put everything into the hands of the master, be joyful instead. Stop worrying about many things you are in God’s hands, you don't know what's ahead of you but you know the one who holds your future. Trust in the Lord, and focus on Him, your one thing!
Some key takeaways
Successful is one that concentrates on one thing.
Capacity in a specific area is built by focusing on one thing.
Advancement is predicated by focusing on one thing.
You can't hit the target when aiming at several goals at once.
